Words of concern?

Mon, 05/06/2024 - 4:00pm

Dear Editor:

While I was pleased to read of Paul Coulombe's continued generosity to the people of the region, I must admit to being somewhat taken aback by Rep. Holly Stover's comments in response. Her statement that "property taxes often pos[e] a significant obstacle to financial stability, especially for those on fixed incomes" seems somewhat jarring considering her recent vote on the subject in Augusta. Just last month, she joined her fellow Democrats in voting to repeal the Municipal Property Tax Levy Limit passed in 2005. This vote came despite the recent WalletHub study showing that not only does Maine have the 4th highest taxes in the country overall, but also has the highest property taxes in the country! Actions speak louder than words. Rep. Stover's actions belie her words of concern for her constituents' financial stability.
