American Legion Post 36

Mon, 04/29/2024 - 8:15am

A reminder that this weekend’s Legion breakfast has been moved from Sunday to Saturday and will be served from 7 to 10 a.m. This is a fundraiser breakfast so come bring a friend or two with you!

The Legion now has two raffles running. Last week we mentioned the four Red Sox/Yankees tickets for July 27. This raffle is to support the Legion baseball team, the 36ers. Tickets are $20 each and are available from members of our Post, coaches of the 36ers, online at the Legion website, Facebook, or directly via this link https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/4d5f2213-d288-4557-ade1-3bb9db45825f.

The other raffle is to support the Legion Jr. Shooting Sport Program. The Legion is raffling off a Springfield Armory Hellcat Pro 9mm 3.7" barrel pistol. This raffle will help purchase equipment to teach youth the proper handling of guns, competition, sportsmanship, patience and concentration. You can buy your raffle tickets online at https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/4627939b-84ee-4025-a343-955d611879e3

The second Honor Flight is happening May 31-June 2. Sunday, June 2 is the Welcome Home ceremony, something everyone should make an attempt to be part of. It will make you proud to be a veteran and proud to be part of this great country. Arrive at the Jetport around 1:15, park for free at the State of Maine Building, 151 Jetport Blvd., and take the shuttle bus to the Jetport. Shuttle buses start at 10:30 a.m. Entertainment while we wait for the veterans to deplane and assemble for the group entrance is provided by The Volunteers Jazz Band.

Last Saturday, the Auxiliary led by Pat Johnson, hosted a talk by Mark Holmquist, the current chief of the Scarborough Police, on his experience as a sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.  Pat and her crew did a truly outstanding job preparing the Hall for Mark’s talk! And many thanks to all who brought the wonderful snacks which were especially appreciated when there was a delay of the start of the presentation due to an accident on Route 27. The red, white, and blue theme of the Hall decorations was truly a perfect backdrop for Mark’s talk about honor, respect, integrity. I won’t write more about the event since Bill Pearson was covering for the Register and Don Carrigan will be hosting a segment about Mark on 207. For those who missed it and want to get a true feeling about what it means to be a Sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknown, Mark Suggested you go to the You Tube titled, “THE UNKNOWNS (2016).”

This coming Monday, May 6, the Maine Veterans Coordinating Committee meeting will be on Zoom at 3 p.m. You can find the link at www.maineveteransinneed.us/affiliation
