Dana Moos swims away with Claw Down first prize

Author, real estate agent and design consultant Dana Moos of Damariscotta won the Best Bite competition at the 7th annual Claw Down at Boothbay Railway Museum on Thursday. Sept.20.

Moos’s lobster wonton was made from lobster meat, wonton crisp, kewpie aioli, smoked butter, charred scallions and truffle oil, with a soy glaze.

Moos is the author of “The Art of Breakfast.” She also won the People’s Choice award as voted on by Claw Down guests. She is a guest chef at the Stonewall Kitchen School in York.

“I am in shock and honored,” Moos said in accepting the award. Quotes from the judges regarding their first choice (sent by emcee Scott Larson): “at the end of the judging, we all wanted another one” and “truly promotes the lobster flavor.”

Judge’s Choice Winner Best Bite Presentation - Stephen Richard, Fisherman’s Wharf: with an Oak Smoked Lobster Meatball. Richards was a former first place winner and was the 2014 and 2017 Maine Lobster Chef of the Year.

Down East Magazine Food Editor Joe Ricchio, lobsterperson Merritt Carey, and Foodie Tour Director Pam Laskey were the judges. Scott Larson was master of ceremonies.

Proceeds were divided between Boothbay Railway Village, Boothbay Region YMCA, Boothbay Region Student Aid Fund and Boothbay Region Community Center.

The Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce event was sponsored by Boothbay Region Greenhouses, the Boothbay Harbor Country Club, Down East Magazine, J.Edward Knight, Jim Beam, Key Bank, Knickerbocker Group, Boothbay Register, Newagen Seaside Inn, Lone Pine, Linekin Bay Resort, Shipyard, Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales, Old Port Speciality Tiles, and Russell House.

Music was supplied by Rupert’s Orchestra of Atlanta, Georgia and Throwing Plates of Washington, D.C.
